Birmingham Judicial committee – student placements 2023

The Birmingham Judiciary have in recent months set up a judicial committee with the aim of improving diversity within the legal profession and judiciary. They have commitments from Birmingham Judges across Civil, Family, Crime and the Tribunals and Michelle Heeley KC on behalf of the Midland Circuit. At the time of writing, they have circa 115 two day student shadowing placements secured for 2023. The target audience is those students who come from non-traditional backgrounds which chimes with a number of initiatives that Birmingham Law Society (BLS) will be pushing in Tony McDaid’s year as President. The committee will shortly be writing to local Universities so that students meeting the criteria can be put forward by their respective University.

In order for the scheme to achieve its reach and objectives, we are looking for BLS firms to offer a two day student placement for 2023. We can and will provide more detail once we know which firms are willing to participate and also how many placements each firm can take on in the next calendar year. Please reply to this call for help at the earliest opportunity and in doing so, help inspire the next generation of Law Students to follow a career in the law, joining the ranks of Solicitors and Barristers who make up the BLS membership. It is important that we support such initiatives and ensure that our profession truly reflects those in society it represents.

Please confirm your willingness to participate by emailing janet@birminghamlawsociety.co.uk.
