Navigating the new ACSP and identity verification regime: Key FAQs for legal professionals

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, a new identity verification regime is being introduced, which requires anyone involved in setting up, running, owning or controlling a company to verify their identity for Companies House.

As of 18 March 2025, third-party providers conducting identity verification on behalf of clients are required to register as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), also known as a Companies House authorised agent. Later, this requirement will extend to any third-party providers making filings on behalf of clients.

The underlying reason behind the identity verification requirements is to improve the accuracy and quality of the data on registers. While this brings new responsibilities for law firms, it also brings new opportunities to streamline services and protect client relationships.

We’ve compiled a comprehensive FAQ document that covers everything law firms need to know, from registration timelines and obligations to efficient methods for carrying out identity checks on clients.
