Datalaw Launches Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship: The New Pathway to Becoming a Trainee Solicitor

Datalaw, a leading provider of legal apprenticeship programmes, is proud to announce the launch of its Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship, a transformative new route for aspiring trainee solicitors and those seeking to become Chartered Legal Executives.

Following the defunding of the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship in January 2026, the legal profession has been searching for a viable alternative pathway for graduates and non-graduates alike to progress towards qualification. The Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship emerges as the promising new solution, offering a structured, practical, and government-funded route into the legal profession.

Understanding the Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship

The Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship is a Level 5 qualification, equivalent to a Higher National Diploma, designed specifically for law graduates and Level 3 paralegals who wish to advance their careers. The programme runs for 14 to 24 months of training, depending on prior qualifications, with an additional four months available to complete the final assessment.

This programme targets the enhancement of legal skills and the practical application of law, making it ideal for anyone who has undertaken a law degree or completed the Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship. With dedicated pathways for both graduates and non-graduates, learners can progress as a Trainee Solicitor or work towards achieving Chartered Legal Executive status.

Government Funding: Up to £18,000 Available

One of the most significant advantages of the Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship is its government funding structure. Employers can access up to £18,000 in training funding through the apprenticeship levy system. For co-funded employers, the maximum contribution is just £900, with levy-paying employers able to utilise their existing levy funds to cover the full cost of training.

This funding model makes the programme accessible to a wide range of law firms and legal departments, removing financial barriers that might otherwise prevent employers from investing in the development of future legal talent.

Flexible Start Dates with Multiple Cohorts

Recognising that recruitment cycles vary across the legal sector, Datalaw offers multiple cohorts throughout the year. This flexibility allows employers to align their apprenticeship intake with their business needs and ensures that aspiring legal professionals can begin their training at a time that suits their circumstances.

A New Era Following the Level 7 Defunding

The defunding of the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship in January 2026 left many graduates uncertain about their route to qualification. The Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship now provides a clear and structured alternative. By completing this programme, learners can progress onto the Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship or undertake the SQE1 assessment, positioning themselves for qualification as a solicitor.

The programme embeds core SQE1 competencies alongside the legal knowledge required to progress onto the Chartered Legal Executive pathway, ensuring learners are well-prepared for whichever route they choose to pursue.

A Comprehensive Curriculum for Modern Legal Practice

The Advanced Paralegal curriculum covers a broad range of modules essential for contemporary legal practice, including:

  • Foundations, Ethics and Professional Conduct
  • Legal Research and Dispute Resolution
  • Negotiation, ADR and Settlement
  • Drafting and Contract Law
  • Wills, Probate and Trusts
  • Client Care, Advising and Tort
  • Case Management and Public Law
  • Property Practice and Land Law
  • Collaboration with Counsel and Regulators
  • AML, Cybersecurity and Criminal Law
  • Business Law, Commercial Awareness and Accounts

While a university law degree often focuses on legal research, this programme develops advanced professional skills needed in practice, including client communication, legal support, and working under supervision.

The Stepping Stone to Chartered Legal Executive Status

For those looking to become a Chartered Legal Executive, the Advanced Paralegal Apprenticeship provides an excellent foundation. The programme enhances learners’ legal skills before they progress onto advanced education to gain their practice rights in a chosen area of law through the Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship. It builds essential competencies in legal research, drafting, interviewing, and advocacy skills that form the foundation of a successful legal career.

Eligibility and Experience Requirements

The programme welcomes candidates with a Level 3 Paralegal qualification, a 2:2 or 2:1 Law degree, a Non-Law degree, or a PGDL/GDL. Pathways are differentiated based on legal experience bands, accommodating those with 0 to 2 years, 2 to 5 years, or 5 or more years of experience in the legal sector.

Learners on this programme may hold the job title of Trainee Solicitor in practice, where this aligns with their employer-designated role and responsibilities.

What Learners Say

Klara Karimy from Oliver Fisher Solicitors shares: “The most attractive thing to me was studying whilst also working. The experience is perfect for gaining the relevant transferable skills. It also means that once you’ve qualified, you are already established.”

Rio Kellman from Renshaw Derrick & Co adds: “What particularly stood out with Datalaw was the support and the mentorship. I really appreciated that you have your own designated progress coach, and you meet with them once a month.”
