What is the purpose and objective of the International Committee?

We exist as with all BLS committees, to first and foremost serve our members. Our objective is to raise awareness of our existence and to promote Birmingham as a city to the international market. We also seek to promote Birmingham lawyers and their firms to a wider global audience.

Do the International Committee put on events?

Yes over the last few years we have held a number of in persons events particularly around the hotly debated topic of BREXIT. KPMG kindly hosted one debate where we had MPs on a panel of speakers representing the Conservative , Labour and UKIP positions. We have also held events at Birmingham Airport with whom we have forged a close relationship.

What was the idea behind engaging with the airport?

We believe that all committees but particularly the International committee need to reach out to the wider business community to explore good practice but also to generate stronger business opportunities. We were fortunate that in Mandy Haque now at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce , we had somebody at the airport who was really keen to engage with us to our mutual benefit. She has been instrumental with our increased and ongoing relationship with the chamber too and has remained on our International committee.

So you don't need to be a lawyer to join the committee?

No , not at all. You do need to be able to bring something to the committee however whether by inroads to the International community or simply with an enthusiasm to help the committee with its workload. At this point in time we are particularly interested to encourage those from a BAME background to consider joining our committee. The same criteria applies but as with all committees we want to be as diverse as we possibly can so that we truly are representative of those we serve.

The Commonwealth Games are coming to Birmingham next year (2022). Are the committee intending to do anything around that?

Indeed we are. We have for some years now been planning a BLS Legal conference around the same time as the games in conjunction with the CLA which will be held at Birmingham University. We are currently working on the programme and expect to release it in a couple of months’ time once we have secured some of the sponsorship packages.
