BLS Criminal Law Committee responds to Sentencing Council consultation on sentencing guidelines for assault offences

Birmingham Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee has responded to the Sentencing Council’s consultation on the revised definitive sentencing guidelines for assault offences.

While the Committee’s response is supportive of the majority of the proposals, it queries whether the draft guideline takes insufficient account of defendants with long-term alcohol and substance addiction, and raises sentencing to a level where those defendants will not receive the sort of targeted community intervention that would reduce offending in the long term.
