St Philips Barristers: From Strength To Strength

The past 12 months have been yet another hugely successful and highly productive period for Chambers.

A highlight of the year and something of which we are immensely proud, is the recognition we have received through being shortlisted for an unprecedented four “Chambers of the Year” accolades at prestigious national law awards – The Lawyer Awards, Legal Business Awards, Legal 500 Bar Awards and Chambers UK Bar Awards. In particular, we were honoured to fly the flag for Birmingham and the regions generally, at both the Lawyer Awards and Legal Business Awards where we were the only set outside of London to be shortlisted.

In addition to nominations for Chambers as a whole, Chambers Director, Joe Wilson found himself amongst highly esteemed company at the Legal 500 Bar Awards following his nomination in the Chambers CEO of the Year category. Joe was one of only two CEOs outside of London to be shortlisted – the other nominee is from our great city too. We were also delighted to see senior family barrister Jonathan Nosworthy win The Worcestershire Law Society’s prestigious Barrister of the Year accolade.

As part of our continued growth, we have welcomed several new barristers to St Philips across a range of specialisms and at all levels of call. Our success has also put us in the envious position of being able to continue to invest heavily in attracting and developing the future talent of The Bar. We are delighted that the five pupil barristers who joined us in October 2021, have all recently become tenants. At the same time, we have welcomed five new pupils to Chambers who begin the next stage of their legal career development.

We have also said a fond farewell to 3 members who have been appointed to the judiciary: His Honour Judge Andrew Smith KC, Her Honour Judge Eve Bugeja and His Honour Judge Redmond.

Outreach, CSR and training have played a big part in our journey this year. In the summer, we were pleased to be able to welcome two interns to Chambers as part of our work with the 10,000 Black Interns initiative and the Bar Placement Scheme. Both of these initiatives are striving to improve equality and diversity in the legal profession and we were honoured to support them by allowing the interns to get their very first taste of life as a barrister.

Turning to the legal directories. The Legal 500 rankings are always eagerly awaited, and we were, once again, thrilled to be named a Top Tier Set. In total, out of 136 barristers, we received 86 individual rankings across the Midland and North Eastern Circuits. This is a tremendous achievement by any measure.

Top Tier practice areas encompassed: Chancery, Probate and Tax, Commercial Litigation, Company and Insolvency, Crime (General and Fraud), Employment, Family and Children Law, Professional Negligence and Property and Construction. We are also proud to be recommended for Business and Regulatory Crime (including Health and Safety), Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury; and secured barrister only rankings for Costs, Inquests and Inquiries and Licensing.

Birmingham as a city has had a truly exceptional year and so has St Philips.
