Response to Consultation on Sentencing offenders with mental health conditions

The Criminal Law committee has today published its response to the Sentencing Council Consultation on Overarching Principles: Sentencing Offenders with Mental Health Conditions or Disorders. The Committee’s Chair, Matt O’Brien in welcoming the Sentencing Council’s proposed guideline comments that,” it has the potential to improve outcomes and access to justice for the most vulnerable people within the criminal justice system.  The current treatment of offenders with mental health conditions is all too often producing inconsistent and inappropriate results. The new guideline should, if adequately resourced, lead to better informed and more appropriate outcomes for these people.”..
