The Birmingham Law Society Legal Tech Committee is delighted to welcome Matthew Lavy KC and colleagues to Birmingham for a special event examining the recently published UK Jurisdiction Taskforce (UKJT) Legal Statement on Liability for AI Harms.

About the Legal Statement

The UK Jurisdiction Taskforce's Legal Statement on Liability for AI Harms examines how established principles of English private law apply where the use of AI causes non-deliberate harm. It provides an important framework for understanding liability as AI becomes increasingly embedded in commercial and professional activity.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in legal and commercial activity, questions of responsibility and liability are moving rapidly from the theoretical to the practical. The UKJT Legal Statement considers how established principles of English private law apply where the use of AI causes non-deliberate harm and provides an important framework for lawyers, businesses and technology providers navigating this developing area.

Matthew Lavy KC, who chaired the UKJT drafting group, will be joined by colleagues involved in the project to discuss the Legal Statement, its practical significance and what may come next as AI technologies and their use continue to develop.

An interactive discussion

Rather than a traditional panel discussion, the speakers will give a series of short presentations followed by an extended interactive audience Q&A.

Questions can be submitted throughout the event using Slido, allowing attendees to raise issues, vote on questions of particular interest and help shape the discussion. The session will provide an opportunity to explore not only the conclusions of the Legal Statement but also the wider questions they raise for legal practice, professional responsibility, AI governance and the future development of the law. The formal session will conclude at approximately 7.30 pm, followed by informal networking and light refreshments.

Who should attend?

The event will be of particular interest to solicitors, barristers, litigators and dispute resolution practitioners, in-house lawyers, legal technology professionals, academics and students, as well as anyone interested in the legal and professional implications of AI.

Places are limited.
