BLS Social Mobility Sub-Committee Vacancies

The Social Mobility Sub-Committee (SMSC) is seeking new members to help drive forward its mission of improving access to and progression within the local legal profession for individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

The SMSC brings together members from a range of professional backgrounds in legal practice and academia. Together, we promote the importance of social mobility within the legal sector and create tangible opportunities for individuals to develop and succeed. We are now looking to expand our impact further by welcoming new members with a passion for our goals.

Our Key Initiatives

The SMSC has led several flagship projects aimed at supporting aspiring and practising lawyers and legal employers in the region, including:

  • Supporting Aspirations in Law (SAIL) – a networking event designed to raise awareness of career paths within the legal profession.
  • The Diversity and Inclusion Scheme – providing financial assistance and mentoring to law graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds seeking to qualify and work in Birmingham.
  • The Social Mobility Conference – a half-day event for local legal employers exploring practical strategies to advance social mobility.
  • The Birmingham Law Society Vacation Scheme – helping aspiring lawyers to strengthen their soft skills and build confidence in a professional setting.
  • The Path to Partnership and Beyond – a panel discussion to share knowledge and guidance about the practicalities of partnership in a law firm.

Commitment

The SMSC meets online on the last Thursday of the month between 12-1pm.

Members are expected to attend meetings regularly and contribute actively to projects and events outside of these sessions.
