Criminal Law Committee responds to the Ministry of Justice Independent review of criminal legal aid: Call for Evidence

The Criminal Law Committee has responded to the Ministry of Justice Independent review of criminal legal aid: Call for Evidence

The Chair of the Committee, Matt O’Brien said:

The Ministry of Justice has called for evidence as part of its independent review of criminal legal aid.  The Criminal Law Committee of Birmingham Law Society has welcomed the opportunity to respond.  We have highlighted the many ways in which chronic underinvestment in criminal legal aid over many years has resulted in an unsustainable marketplace for these vital legal services.   Criminal lawyers safeguard the rights of the most vulnerable members of our society and play an essential part in a system that protects the whole of society : the Government must act urgently to salvage criminal legal services for the future.”
