National law firm Shakespeare Martineau has advised health technology business Dexter AI on its spin-out from the University of Birmingham, supporting the next stage of growth for its Real-World Evidence platform.
Originating as a University of Birmingham spin-out, Dexter’s mission is to democratise health research. Its software accelerates epidemiological research by working with routinely collected real-world data in near real time, extracting analysis-ready datasets and producing results based on a user’s study design in minutes.
The platform is designed to help researchers, clinicians and other healthcare stakeholders turn data into actionable insights, improve health outcomes and support continuous learning and improvement.
Shakespeare Martineau’s intellectual property team supported Dexter AI on the transition of university-borne IP into an independent vehicle to enable Dexter AI to make the software platform available on the commercial market.
The team was led by Shakespeare Martineau’s transactional intellectual property lawyers, Selina Hinchliffe and Charlotte Cassells, who both regularly support both universities and spin-out companies as they transition IP assets from academia to commercially valuable assets.
Charlotte said: “It’s great to support Dexter AI with finalising this transaction. The UK’s university sector is home to some of the most innovative technologies in the world and we are pleased to continue supporting university spin out companies such as Dexter AI as they take the next steps in their journey.”
